"I loved being a part of mock trial. It helped me confirm my decision to pursue a career in law, and it was an experience that I would not trade for the world!" Mark Gutman is currently a JD Candidate at St. John's University School of Law. Since graduating Queens College and leaving the Pre-Law Association, he has gone on to win two Moot Court competitions at St. John's and was accepted into the Moot Court Honor Society.
"I can confidently say that the experience I gained from the Pre-Law Association has directly contributed to my success as a law student. I am incredibly proud and honored to be a founding member of the Pre-Law Association and I hope that every member can benefit as much out of the organization as I did. The Pre-Law Association was one of the first real steps towards my legal career as the work done in preparation for both Mock Trial and Moot Court competitions directly mirrors the work required in law school and in all areas of the legal profession. Whether it's gaining the necessary skills in reading cases, figuring out how to understand complicated statutes, or just learning to work with others to put on a legal argument, the experience gained as a member in the Pre-Law Association is invaluable. I look forward to seeing it grow and last as more and more students reap the benefits of an amazing organization." Arbesh Khan is a graduate of Queens College with a double major in Political Science and Legal History. She has been a part of the Pre-Law Association for the past two years and loves competing in mock trial. She has known that she wanted to be a lawyer since middle school, when she read “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
"Even with the months of preparation for regionals, my favorite part of mock trial is thinking on your feet and coming up with responses on the spot like real trial lawyers. It’s really helped me with my public speaking skills, as well being able to work in a team." Ashley Meza is currently studying Political Science and International Affairs at The George Washington University.
"After participating in the Queens College Pre-Law Association Moot Court and Mock Trial competitions, I was inspired to establish the first Moot Court team at my current university. Being a part of the Pre-law Association at Queens College made me realize my passion for debate and my love for law. I was able to meet amazing people with aspirations like my own and make life long friends." Scott Stiefel is currently a senior at Queens College, pursuing a degree in Psychology. In his time at Queensborough Community College, Scott became a member of Psi Beta, The National Honor Society in Psychology for Community and Junior Colleges. Scott enjoys helping others. He works with an individual with special needs, and volunteers for his local synagogue. His role as an attorney on mock trial has furthered his aspirations of becoming a lawyer in the future. In his spare time, he loves to watch House M.D. and practice his golf swing at the local driving range.
Victoria Tan is currently a J.D. candidate at Duke University School of Law. She is a 2016 graduate of William E. Macaulay Honors College, with a dual degree in Cultural Anthropology and Merchandise Marketing. She competed in the American Mock Trial Association tournaments from 2013-2016, during which she received an Outstanding All-Region Attorney award in February 2015. In her free time, she pursues her interests in fashion, and is a lover of all things food and travel.
"Without joining the PLA and agreeing last minute to fill an open spot on the mock trial team in 2013, I doubt I would have recognized that I wanted to pursue law as a career. Participating in mock trial has challenged me to move beyond my comfort zone, and encouraged me to hone leadership, public speaking, and critical thinking skills. It has been the greatest privilege to watch this team and organization grow." Nicole Wong
"Attending Queens College was an experience I'll never forget. It was there that I studied Political Science & English, met wonderful like-minded scholars and began the Pre-Law Association. My time spent with our Moot Court and Mock Trial teams has equipped me to handle life post-graduation. Time-management, writing, speaking, thinking critically and enjoying life are all abilities of mine that have been strengthened because of this amazing organization. I know that in years to come, so many lives will benefit from the PLA, which started as an idea in the back of our minds and continues to grow as the place where so many lawyers and lovers of law can prepare themselves to change the world." Owen Yun graduated from Queens College with a Bachelors in Political Science. He currently works for the federal government at the U.S. Social Security Administration.
"I loved mock trial ever since I started at Queensborough Community College. It is simply not just the competition but the bond you build with your peers. I took all that I've learned and started the Queens College Mock Trial team along with the Pre-Law Association. Although I am not in law school, I'm happy to have learned that many of our Pre-Law alums are moving forward and becoming future lawyers. This is a great chance to explore the law field, meet great people and prove to yourself and those around you that you have what it takes to be a good leader, team-mate, friend and student in the art of mock-trial law. Challenge yourself." |
